Cast List
Rory Wilton - Anthony
We have used an older man for the drug addict which goes against Stanley Hall's 1904 theory which states "adolescence is inherently a time of storm and stress which all young people go through some degree of emotional and behavioural upheaval, before establishing a more stable equilibrium at adulthood." As you can see, the character of Anthony is much older than the person Stanley Hall is theorising this quote to. This allows our film to go against common conventions of the typical drug addict and 'behavioural upheaval' Stanley Hall believes young people face and instead replace that stereotype with an older man. This I believe will allow our film to stand-out and allow the audience to go against the stereotypes of which people in society they see as drug addicts and instead see it from another persons point of view which they may not have realised. The character of Anthony also links to the theory of Richard Butsch who suggests that working class males in the media are presented as, "incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb." He goes onto say, "in almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others." This theory mostly represents the character of Anthony, however Anthony is not 'well-intentioned' in the actions he makes over the course of the narrative. The equilibrium of the character is unable to be resoled which forces the character into a disequilibrium.
Emma Spurgin-Hussey - Lucy
Rebecca Mead-Stuchbery - Jessica
Even though we have gone against Stanley Hall's stereotype for our main protagonist of Anthony, we have intervened these stereotypes into the daughter of Anthony, Jessica. The 'storm and stress' theory apply's to the character of Jessica. The fact she drank the class of Whiskey and snap chatted it to other youths shows her characters need for excitement, which Stanley Hall theorises saying, "Youth must have excitement and if this is not at hand in form of of moral intellectual enthusiasm's it is more prone to be sought in; sex, drink or drugs."
Benjamin Lee Hicks - Drug Dealer
Media theorist Bill Osgerby argues that the portrayal of 'youth' in media has not really altered much in the last 100 years. He quotes saying, "We do not have to search too hard to find negative representations of youth in postwar Britain. Crime, violence and sexual licence have been recurring themes in the media's treatment of youth culture, the degeneracy of the youth depiction as indicative of a steady disintegration of the UK's social fabric." (1998) This theory applies to the drug dealer in our film. However, Osgerby goes onto argue that 'mixed metaphors' appear when analysing representations of the youth. Osgerby claims "Dual stereotyping of youth" creates this mixed metaphors which Dick Hebdige termed in 1988, "youth as fun" and "youth as trouble maker."
Alison Dures - Therapist
